Best Locksmith Claims: What Really Matters
Search for a locksmith and almost every listing claims to be top of the field. A slogan costs nothing, so it tells you nothing. Here is what to look at instead.
Professional from the first call
A trustworthy locksmith service:
- Asks sensible questions about the lock, door or vehicle
- Gives an estimate before anyone is sent, and explains what could change it
- Arrives with identification
- Confirms the price before starting work
- Does not push upgrades you did not ask for
Judge by evidence
Look for reviews on independent sites, recommendations from neighbours and a business that is easy to reach after the job. A detailed written invoice is a good sign.
Licensing, training and insurance
Requirements differ between states and cities. Whatever applies locally, it is reasonable to ask whether the person doing the work is insured for damage, what training they have, and whether they belong to a trade body such as the Associated Locksmiths of America.
Know who actually does the work
Many locksmith listings, including ours, are dispatch services that send independent contractors. That is not a problem in itself, but you should know it. Our terms and conditions explain that the contractor invoices you and provides the warranty.
Red flags
- A price that sounds far too low, then grows once the work starts
- Refusal to give any estimate
- Pressure to drill or replace a lock that could be picked or rekeyed
- No ID and no written invoice
If something feels wrong, you can decline the work and pay only what was agreed for the visit.
The bottom line
Good locksmith service shows up in honest pricing, careful work and respect for your property. Our price list is published so you can compare before you call.
